Kelly Racing drivers Jason Bargwanna and Tony Ricciardello have fought hard on deteriorating soft tyres in the opening race of the sixth round of the 2010 V8 Supercar Championship Series at Winton Motor Raceway in rural Victoria today.
Bargwanna started from 21st position aboard his #11 Rock Holden Commodore in today's 40-lap race. Bargwanna, racing in his 150th V8 Supercar event this weekend, pitted early in the race on lap 14 to get out of the frenetic pack racing and run in clear air. The strategy moved up the order but as his rear tyres wore badly, Bargwanna dropped back down the order to finish in 23rd position. “We will take the positives out of today and we set one of the fastest laps of the race today in the Rock Commodore,” said Jason Bargwanna. “Towards the end of the race we just ran out of rear tyres. We moved up a fair bit but just couldn't hang onto it. “Tomorrow's race is going to be longer and tougher so we will have to do some work on the car tonight. “We blew out almost seven seconds a lap from doing 1:23s to 1:30s by the end. It's difficult with these tyres dropping off so much. “It's hard to know how hard to push to conserve them. In this race we pitted early to try to get track position but we just couldn't hold on in the end.
